How Merboard handles your data.
Guest mode (no account)
- You can start a board instantly with no sign-up. The board is saved on our server so it survives refreshes and so AI agents can edit it over MCP.
- Guest boards are anonymous and ownerless. Access is by link: anyone who has the board’s link can open it, and an edit link lets them change it. Treat board links like passwords.
- We store a random guest name and a board token in your browser’s local storage so you return to the same board. We don’t collect your email or identity.
- When you sign out, we clear this guest state from your browser so the next person using this device starts fresh.
Signed-in mode (account)
- Boards you create or claim are owned by your account and private by default. Only you (and people you explicitly share with) can access them.
- We store your account details (name, email) to authenticate you and to show who is collaborating.
- If you sign in while working on a guest board and choose “keep”, that board is claimed into your account and becomes private to you.
Collaboration & AI agents
- Live collaboration shares your cursor, your name, and your current selection with others on the same board while you are connected.
- Connecting a coding agent (e.g. Claude Code) over MCP lets that agent read and edit the board you grant it. A board-scoped link grants access to only that board; an account-wide connection can reach all your boards.
